DEVOLUTION

What happens when nature fights back?

In Devolution, Max Brooks blends survival horror with social satire, crafting a gripping tale of terror, chaos, and unexpected heroes. When Mount Rainier erupts, it doesn’t just bring volcanic destruction; it drives a population of displaced Sasquatches into contact with humans—resulting in a battle for survival that is as brutal as it is thought-provoking.

The story unfolds through journal entries, interviews, and expert commentary, centered on the residents of Greenloop, a remote eco-tech community in the Pacific Northwest. These seemingly idealistic and ill-prepared suburbanites are forced to confront not only the horrors of nature but also their own limitations and instincts. As supplies dwindle and help fails to arrive, their high-tech comforts become useless against a primal enemy.

Brooks expertly balances suspense and realism, delivering survival tips that feel practical yet chilling in the midst of a fictional narrative. His knack for building tension is palpable, immersing readers in the escalating conflict. The Sasquatches are no mere cryptid caricatures; they are intelligent, deadly, and disturbingly believable predators, making the humans’ fight for survival both compelling and terrifying.

Beyond the blood-soaked encounters and visceral action, Devolution offers sharp critiques of modern society—our overreliance on technology, the fragility of infrastructure, and the ways human hubris can lead to devastating consequences. Brooks doesn’t shy away from examining humanity’s darker sides, contrasting them with the raw instincts of the Sasquatches.

For fans of World War Z, this novel delivers a similarly cinematic blend of horror and social commentary. With nods to Michael Crichton and Stephen King, Devolution is a thrilling exploration of what happens when civilization collapses and survival becomes a primal struggle. Equal parts terrifying and fascinating, it’s a must-read for anyone who loves their horror smart and savage.
