DEAD RIGHT

A ghostly scream, a dangerous mystery, and a world on edge—Dead Right will keep you hooked from start to finish.

Tim Susman’s Dead Right delivers a thrilling blend of supernatural suspense and detective grit, making it a standout in urban fantasy. In this gripping sequel, Korean-American private investigator Jae Kim faces a high-stakes case involving a rebellious ghost, a powerful government agency, and the dark realities of a world divided by prejudice.

The story begins with Penny, a 17-year-old ghost bound to Jae by a magical ring after her death unleashes an eerie, supernatural screech in Chicago’s Wolftown—a walled haven for extranormal beings like werewolves, vampires, and shapeshifters. As Jae unravels the mystery behind Penny’s death, he becomes a target of the Bureau of Extranormal Affairs (BEA), a shadowy organization determined to exploit Penny’s secrets. Together with allies like Yumi, a fierce snow spirit, and his loyal boyfriend Czoltan, Jae must navigate perilous truths to protect Penny and everyone he cares about.

Susman skillfully balances an action-packed plot with thoughtful social commentary. The discrimination faced by “extras” serves as a powerful metaphor for real-world marginalization, while nuanced language updates, such as “multimorph” instead of “extra,” emphasize the novel’s depth and relevance. The richly imagined world, inspired by mythologies from Indigenous, Mesoamerican, and Asian cultures, feels alive and immersive.

Jae stands out as a sharp, resourceful detective whose human struggles—scarred memories, relationship challenges, and navigating systemic injustice—make him deeply relatable. Penny’s growth from an irritable ghost to a determined partner adds emotional weight, while Yumi’s strength and Czoltan’s warmth enrich the dynamic ensemble.

With a tightly woven narrative, bursts of humor, and heart-pounding twists, Dead Right explores both personal and societal conflicts. Its climactic conclusion ties up loose ends while leaving room for more adventures in this complex world.

Susman’s Dead Right is a thrilling ride packed with mystery, heart, and a poignant message about acceptance. Perfect for fans of supernatural noir with a dash of humanity. Highly recommended.
