The Brook by John Sinsimer

One man’s discovery unlocks a race against time to save his town from a hidden corporate disaster.

The Brook by John Sinsimer takes readers on an emotional and thought-provoking journey through a small suburban town plagued by toxic waste, corporate greed, and the fight for justice. Set in the fictional town of Comptons Pond, the novel follows Harry Bonner, the newly elected mayor who discovers a dark secret hidden in a locked file cabinet—documents related to the cleanup of toxic waste at the Smithfield Powder Works. What seems like an ordinary discovery leads Harry down a path of perilous investigation, as he, along with his wife, a seasoned environmental investigator, a borough attorney, and a team of activists, works to expose the dangerous contamination that threatens the health of the entire community.

The novel touches on issues of environmental negligence, corporate corruption, and the health risks associated with the improper disposal of toxic waste, specifically focusing on lead and mercury contamination. As Harry and his team race against time to protect their town, they are confronted with moral dilemmas, dangerous opposition, and heartbreaking consequences. The story is based on real events from the author’s own life, reflecting his battle to hold the DuPont corporation accountable for polluting his hometown.

The Brook is not only a gripping thriller but also a powerful call to action, warning readers about the devastating effects of environmental destruction and the importance of community-driven activism. This heartfelt story sheds light on the human cost of corporate greed, offering a sobering reminder of the need for vigilance and environmental responsibility.

John J. Sinsimer, also known as Jack Sinsimer, is a former mayor of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, where he uncovered a toxic pollution scandal that would later inspire his gripping novel, The Brook. Born in 1946 in Kearny, NJ, Sinsimer grew up in Pompton Lakes, where he made a lasting impact on the community. A graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University, Sinsimer was awarded an athletic scholarship for track and cross-country. His experiences in both local politics and environmental activism fueled his passion for exposing corporate wrongdoings, which is evident in his powerful storytelling. The Brook highlights the fight against the DuPont corporation’s pollution, a battle he courageously led during his time as mayor. His real-life experiences provide the foundation for the novel, which has received widespread acclaim for its compelling narrative and hard-hitting social commentary.

Sinsimer’s real-life efforts to advise other communities grappling with DuPont contamination—including in West Virginia—preceded the cases popularized by Dark Waters and Erin Brockovich. The events depicted in the novel began in 1988, making The Brook a compelling precursor to these high-profile environmental battles.
